  10. the National Association for Bilingual Education Conference

  12. HOUSTON, Texas--February 25, 1993--Apple Computer, Inc. today
  13. announced the "Apple Early Language Connections - Spanish/English
  14. edition" - program, a literature-based early language arts package
  15. designed to provide kindergarten through second grade bilingual
  16. Spanish and English students with a balanced reading, writing,
  17. listening, and speaking curriculum.
  18.     The comprehensive hardware/software curriculum package, developed in
  19. collaboration with bilingual experts and teachers, allows educators
  20. to seamlessly integrate Apple Macintosh computer systems, software,
  21. books and audiotapes into a multi-sensory learning experience.
  22.     The package, which will be available for purchase by K-12
  23. institutions later this summer, is the follow-on offering to the
  24. English version announced last May.
  25.     The "Apple Early Language Connections" package features a rich array
  26. of learning tools, materials and peripheral devices, including the
  27. Macintosh LC III computer system; the AppleCD 150 CD-ROM drive; the
  28. Apple OneScanner scanning device; the Apple ImageWriter II color
  29. printer; a classroom library of more than 350 books from Scholastic
  30. Inc.; and a selection of story and music audiotapes.
  31.     The new package also features EdMark Corporation's TouchWindow
  32. transparent panel that converts a Macintosh computer monitor into a
  33. touch-sensitive screen; and the Muppet Learning Keys by WINGS for
  34. learning that provides an engaging keyboard alternative for younger
  35. children.
  36.     According to Javier Villalobos, manager of Bilingual and ESL
  37. education marketing for Apple, the "Apple Early Language Connections
  38. - Spanish/English edition" - package provides a multi-dimensional
  39. supplement to an elementary teacher's existing language arts
  40. curriculum that excels on both English and Spanish language
  41. platforms.
  42.     "Because the 'Early Language' program is equally proficient in both
  43. English and Spanish, it is an ideal solution for both dual language
  44. and elementary foreign language settings," said Villalobos.  "By
  45. offering easy integration with a number of excellent Macintosh-based
  46. programs, teachers can use the program to customize and enhance their
  47. language arts curriculum."
  48.     Villalobos noted that teacher training and on-going support will be
  49. important components of this package, and that  Apple intends to
  50. offer in-service training and newsletter updates for teachers as well
  51. as a toll-free hotline.

  53. Preinstalled Software, Detailed Lesson Plans Offer Ease-of-Use
  54.     The "Apple Early Language Connections - Spanish/English edition" -
  55. hardware component comes pre-configured as teacher or student
  56. "stations," with software already installed on the Macintosh LC III
  57. computer's hard drive.  The teacher's station software includes
  58. desktop publishing and teacher productivity software while the
  59. student's station software includes leading education solutions
  60. designed to work together in a language-rich classroom environment.
  61.     At the heart of the package is a two-volume comprehensive teachers
  62. manual featuring seven, four-week thematic curriculum units--two each
  63. for grades K through 2, with an additional four-week unit for
  64. kindergarten.  All seven units are based on one of these themes, such
  65. as fantasy or animals, and are supported by detailed lesson plans for
  66. literature, music, math, and science activities, allowing teachers to
  67. create or enhance their own lessons using the thematic units as
  68. models.  Teachers are also provided with easy-to-use software
  69. instructions and ideas for classroom organization, parent
  70. involvement, newsletter development, and other useful information.

  73.     An important component of The Early Language Connections' curriculum
  74. package is a powerful portfolio assessment tool that provides
  75. teachers with an easy way to store and retrieve students' work.  "The
  76. Grady Profile - Portfolio Assessment:  Early Language Edition" has been
  77. specifically customized for the package and allows both parents and
  78. students to analyze, assess and monitor on-going student development.
